Episode Name: 9. Mario Mola - Multiple World Champion Triathlete

In this episode of BE with Champions, host Greg Bennett interviews Mario Mola, a three-time ITU World Series champion. Mario is from the island of Mallorca, Spain and is now arguably the fastest runner in the world of Triathlon. At the young age of 29, he is already a legend in the sport of triathlon. Greg and Mario discuss Mario’s wins, training, and goals throughout his career.

Mario starts by sharing his races and experiences in 2019. He has a gift, transitioning from the top ten in the race to pushing his way to the front. They discuss Mario’s consistency while racing the variety of new racers and competition on the field. He enjoys racing new athletes to push his abilities. He feels 2019 has given him a great hunger to be even more successful in 2020.

Mario discusses where his passion for endurance sports began. Mario didn’t enjoy soccer as a child, which drove him toward swimming, where a coach then pushed him toward triathlons. While in college in Barcelona, he was able to train well, win large competitions, and gain a passion for triathlons. From there he began training professionally and working with world-renowned coach Joel Filliol. Mario has surrounded himself with encouraging people. His supportive trainer, parents, and girlfriend help carry him through his athletic journey. He and his girlfriend both have the goals of racing in the Olympics.

Sleep and nutrition are very important to Mario’s career and athletic abilities. He sleeps at least nine hours a day with a possible nap as well. He eats meals early in the evening to help gain as much sleep as possible, which is contradictory to his cultural upbringing, where late-night meals are common. With extreme amounts of traveling, he says a diet and sleep routine is necessary. Keeping a simple diet helps implement a routine while on the road. Both Greg and Mario agree that creating a home base is a great way to keep an athlete grounded while on the road. Massage is also a part of Mario’s weekly routine, and Mario has physiotherapists travel with him while on the road. Mario realizes the older he becomes, these tools are necessary to recover and train well through the entirety of his career.

Mario describes his routine work week while training and on the road. He also discusses his mental strategies while racing. Both Greg and Mario talk about “visualizing” to create mental preparation for a race, but they believe the physical practice is the best preparation for an athlete. Mario also shares how athletes should not overextend themselves while practicing so they can enter a race renewed and ready to compete.

Mario also talks about the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo and the complexities of the race, and the two discuss the location and the other athletes competing. Both Greg and Mario agree that this year will be a great and challenging competition.

Lastly, Mario gives his tips for triathlon racers. His hometown, Mallorca, is a great place for other athletes to practice. He believes in observing other athletes and learning from the best to help you succeed!
